Parent Reading Scheme

At the end of last term a request for Reading volunteers was made which resulted in six ladies attending meetings with myself. At these meetings the ladies learnt and practised the Phonetic alphabet and discussed de-coding and reading techniques.

The ladies worked with Amber, Green and Indigo classes from 17th May, till the end of term; providing much appreciated and valued support to the children in these classes. Over this short period of time it was noticed that the programme was of great benefit to the children. It has boosted the confidence of the children and helped to encourage them to read.

The ladies are willing to carry on supporting these children, as they progress to year 2.

If there are any more volunteers who wish to help with reading please contact

Mrs J.Gunning.

The Reading Project - By Debbie Revell

I have 6 adults who come into school about once a week and work with reception classes. They currently read with the children. The adults have been given some training as to how we read and use sounds to help the children. The project is a great help to the reception classes as it helps get through all the readers every week.

There is also a lady coming in and helping with the year 5 children.

Feedback from the adults is that they enjoy their reading sessions with the children. This project is also helping a couple of adults who have recently had children and are hoping to get back into the world of work again.

Secondary Links

At New City we continue to welcome and develop links between primary and secondary schools.

We invite all Year 6 parents interested in joining the Brampton Manor Parents Group to contact Tracey Davis or Helen Matthews (in the office) to find out dates and times of upcoming forums. The group aims to keep parents informed of school activities and provides you with the opportunity to discuss any issues with the school you may have.

Free School Meals

Everyone gets free school meals at the moment in Newham. However, it is still worth applying for free school meals if you are eligible. The pilot is only for two years and to continue with free school meals, you will still need to have applied.

Adult Choir

Calling all Mums, Dads and Members of the Community...
...all are welcome at our Adult Choir. We meet on Tuesdays at 3.45pm until 4.45pm in the Ground Floor hall. You will be made very welcome. No need to be able to read music - all that is needed is enthusiasm, an enjoyment of singing and a willingness to join in. We sing in a wide variety of styles - so there should be something for everyone. We aim to give 2 or 3 performances a year.

Come along, don't be shy!

We need your help!

Do you know anyone who would like to advertise their business on New City's school website? We already have four businesses advertised here. Simply send the photos and any write-up to the school (by email, post, fax or handwritten) and we will do the rest. All we ask in return is a donation in kind, whether it be a bunch of flowers for the school reception, tennis balls for the PE cupboard...pretty much anything.
