Technology Week 2010
New City’s Science Week took place the week beginning 23rd March. It was a very enjoyable week with lots of exciting scientific activities.
Melanie from SHANKS East London came into school to teach the children about the 3R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Children from the infants and juniors took part in ‘rubbish relays’ and got to meet MuRFY, the household recycling dog.
Mr Archer worked with both infant and junior classes during science week. He worked with the infants to teach them how to play ‘goal ball’ – a game that involves wearing a blindfold and listening carefully for a ball with a bell in it. Children were able to understand how important our senses are. They had the opportunity to experiment with the jingle ball to see how our bodies react to different sounds and directions. The year 3 children did a session with Mr Archer based on heart rate and circulation. The children completed a SAQ (Speed, Agility and Co-ordination) course and measured how their bodies changed after exercise.
The junior children all visited the Science Museum and were able to go to the brilliant Launch Pad – which contained loads of fantastic interactive science. The year 3,4 and 5 children also got to see a science show by the museum’s outreach team. The year sixes went to an interactive exhibition called ‘Refuelling the Energy’ – where the children learnt what life would be like when fossil fuels run out.
Eight lucky year 5 and 6 children that are gifted and talented in science visited Dr Gunter’s BodyWorld’s Exhibition at the O2. We had a great day – but unfortunately we weren’t allowed to take any photos inside. A big thank you to the PTA for funding the visit!
Mrs Withnall worked with a variety of children from the infants and reception, to talk about healthy eating. The children made delicious, healthy fruit salads and of course ate them afterwards.
The year sixes organised the Science Fair – a new city tradition. There were many exciting stalls with exciting demonstrations and resources. Children were able to mould teeth from play-dough, make up acronyms to help ordering the planets and learn how to make interesting shadow puppets.
Finally, a big thank you to Mrs Metcalf who worked really hard to transform our rainbow room into ‘Space’ and was our resident photographer for the week. Also to all the staff who helped to prepare lots of challenging and interesting lessons and activities that I haven’t been able to mention.
Good luck to anyone who bought a sunflower seed pack for the biggest sunflower competition – happy gardening!

Healthy School
Here at New City the staff, pupils, parents and governors understand the importance of living a healthy balanced lifestyle and it's benefits. We want all children at New City to be healthy and achieve at school and in life. Which is why the school has been working hard by offering various drop-ins, clubs, sports teams and activities both in and out of school to ensure that the pupils at New City have the best opportunities in the borough! We know that in the longer term, this will lead to improved health, reduced health inequalities, increased social inclusion and raised achievement for all.
In December 2009, New City Primary school acheived it's offical Healthy Schools status! The school was recognised for successfully various criteria in relation to the four core themes of:
- Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE), (which includes sex and relationships education and drug education
- Healthy Eating,
- Physical Activity and
- Emotional Health and Well being
We will continue to work hard to maintain this status and also to take next steps to acheive the AHSS (Advanced Healthy School Standard).
Religious Education Open Evening 2009
Science & Technology Open Evening
In June the Science & ICT departments at New City merged to create a fabulous exhibition.
The work exhibited was from Science Week (March 09) and ICT Week (June 09). There were examples of children’s work – which was produced at the City Learning Centre (Stratford School), organised by Mrs Bamford and photographs to show some of the amazing experiments and investigations that children had carried out.
Mr Taylor and Mr Murphy were also demonstrating how to use some of the ICT equipment. Children and adults were using digi blues and digital cameras to record footage and images. They were then shown how to load them onto a computer and edit them. Mr Taylor also had a stand highlighting the importance of internet safety to remind parents and children of the dangers!
Science & ICT Weeks are enjoyed by adults and children alike – but can be very costly. This year Science & ICT weeks were completely free. Next year however, New City are going to hold their first ever Science & Technology Week (combined). We want to make this the most exciting, innovative and educational week ever!
For this, we will need as much money as possible – and are already fundraising with raffles and our ‘Collect a Copper’ competitions.
If anyone can help us either financially or has expertise in a particular area – all the staff and children at the school would be incredibly grateful!
So remember – keep collecting coppers over the summer and look out for raffles with great prizes!
Finally, a big thank you to the star of the show Mrs Metcalf for getting the exhibition ready and making it look so fantastic!

Harvest Festival 2009
Another successful harvest festival at New City. The students donated an abundance of food which was gratefully welcomed by members of our community. Songs, poems and music productions were some of the ways we celebrated harvest this year.

Dance Crew Workshop

Friday 3rd July, Mandy (learning mentor) arranged for the fabulous FLAVA – (dance troop from Britain’s Got Talent) to come into school and work through a B Inspired workshop with the year sixes.
The B Inspired workshop is exactly what the title suggests, an inspiring workshop that builds confidence in children and young adults through the power of dance.
The children worked with FLAVA to learn and perform dance – as well as tackling some ‘real issues’ such as knife crime gang violence and bullying.
A big thank you to FLAVA and Mandy for a great afternoon!

Parents have been excellent at helping to maintain security and safety at the school. Please continue to close outer doors and gates when you enter or leave the school.
Always report to the office if you visit the school during the day and please report anything unusual to us.
Just to inform you all, that breakfast club is still running. It takes place every school day morning from 8.00a.m through till 8.55 a.m.
The breakfast club is a healthy option and for a small fee of just £1.50 per day we will provide fruit, cereal, toast, muffins, fruit juice, milkshake, beans on toast, scrambled egg on toast and various healthy jam toppings.
If you would your child to join or require more information then please contact Mandy.
